Laurel Handfield has authored numerous fiction and nonfiction articles for "Guide" and "Bumples" magazine. Although she has been writing for years, her career officially began in 2003 with the release of her first novel, "My Diet Starts Tomorrow." She graduated from Cheyney University with a bachelor's degree in marketing. It was there she became serious about writing.

If you want to give a gift to a girl you're dating, you may want to get beyond the old standbys of flowers and candy. If you've just begun dating or have been dating for years, go for a gift that demonstrates you were actually listening when she told you about her favorite author or about a cooking class she has always wanted to take. She will love and cherish your thoughtful gift almost as much as she loves and cherishes you.

Baked Goods

Love does not mean heading down to your local grocery store five minutes before closing and buying a box of stale brownies. If you want to go the baked goods route, do it yourself. This means getting your hands dirty with flour and chocolate. The good news is that you will have the bragging rights of saying you did this all yourself. If you decide to leave the baking to the professionals, go for a treat that she absolutely loves. If she likes fudge brownies, put in a special request to have the brownies baked in the shape of hearts. Add a personal touch by placing the brownies in a hand-picked tin or box.

Gift Baskets

One plus to giving your girlfriend a gift basket is that you can fill the basket with items you both can enjoy. For instance, if she's a horror movie buff, give her a basket full of her favorite old-school horror movies like the original "Friday the 13th" or "Nightmare on Elm Street." Spend the evening cuddled under a blanket with a tin of popcorn while watching the horror fest. If she is a pasta lover, give her a gift basket filled with different types of pasta and sauces. Include an Italian cookbook so you can spend a quiet evening with her trying out new recipes.

Lingerie

A gift like this would depend on the status of the relationship. If you've been dating for awhile and want to spice things up a bit, give her some flirty lingerie. You can personalize items like a bikini thong with a special printed message like, "Dave's Girl." Lingerie doesn't have to be sexy. If you know she likes lounging on Saturday mornings after a hard week of work, get her satin pajamas with matching slippers. Add a personal touch by having her initials engraved on the pocket.

Music

Purchase CDs of her favorite musical artist or download her favorite songs to one CD. Buy her an MP3 player and download some songs for her. Instead of the mushy love songs she loathes, download the music you know she enjoys, like rap and dance music.
