As a guy, you've probably been there once or twice. You pick up the phone, dial her number, she picks up and all of a sudden you draw a blank. Knowing what to say to a girl on the phone can be difficult. This is especially true because guys don't typically have the conversation experience on the phone that girls do talking to each other. Awkward pauses on the phone can ruin the experience when talking to a girl and forever typecast you into her "boring" category.
Deciding what to say to a girl on the phone starts before you even pick up the receiver. You should always have a reason for calling in mind. This is especially true the first few times you are calling her. If it is your first time calling this girl, then it is a perfect time to invite her on a date. Setting up a meeting with her is a perfect way to spend your time on the phone. You should also remember that your time on the phone does not have to be long and drawn out. Having a point to calling, even it is just to say hello, will give your conversation focus. Keeping your conversation short and sweet will also leave her wanting more when you hang up. Before you call, prepare some talking points. Interesting current events are always a good conversational piece over the phone. Ask some open ended questions about her that allow her to elaborate on her likes and dislikes. Take this opportunity to get to know her a little better when you are not face to face. This will help you to plan dates in the future.
Set the Tone
While you should always be yourself when talking to a girl on the phone, you also strive to make a good impression if you like her. Greet her warmly when first making contact over the phone. Saying phrases like, "It's good to hear your voice" or "I'm glad to hear from you," with kindness and enthusiasm will let her know you care. Be sure not to overdo this however, as eagerness can quickly be mistaken for desperation. Smiling while you are talking to her will make her do the same. She will be able to sense that you are happy to talk to her and it will sound genuine. Most girls like it when you take control of a conversation by setting the tone.
Communicate to Get Closer
Asking her about her day after telling a little bit about yours is a good way to keep the communication going. Always give her time and the opportunity to respond without being annoying with your inquisitiveness. One rule of thumb to remain aware of is to avoid offending her while on the phone. Asking questions about who she's with when she's not around you or if she has any other guy friends may be a big turn off. Don't treat her like your property. Use the time you are on the phone with a girl to spark interest. Read her a few pages from an interesting book or a poem you wrote. Spend the time playing games such as I-spy or hangman. These techniques should only be employed if she is both interested and comfortable in doing so.
