How to Spend a Romantic Weekend in North Carolina

by Travel Editor

You and you significant other have decided to ditch the real world for the weekend and fill 2 days with nothing but time alone and romance. Whether you're into the mountains, the beach or complete pampering, North Carolina is a great choice for your romantic getaway weekend.

Head for the mountains. If you're idea of romance is a picturesque outlook over the mountains, then take a trip to the mountains in Western North Carolina. These beautiful mountains have been chosen several times throughout the decades by Hollywood movie producers for their spectacular views. The Biltmore Estate is a one-stop shop for a romantic weekend. Located among the Blue Ridge Mountains in Ashville, North Carolina, this "castle" offers lodging, shopping, dining and acres of beautiful gardens. Its 8,000 acres also offer hiking, horseback riding, boating, fishing, carriage rides and riverboat trips. If you can't stay in the estate, get a day pass to the estate and stay at one of several local hotels, or bed and breakfast inns.

Take a dip in the ocean. If the beach is your idea of romance, North Carolina has a coastline full of them. Some of the most popular beaches are located in the Outer Banks. If you're an adventurer, Kitty Hawk offers hang gliding. Carolina Beach, located close to the Outer Banks, has such attractions as a haunted train ride, shopping and many great seafood restaurants.

Relax at the spa. North Carolina has several stay-spas to choose from for a romantic weekend of relaxation. In Ashville alone you can find Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa, the Essence Recovery Center and ASIA (A Spa-Inn Ashville). The OC Spa and Wellness Center is located in Indian Beach, the Old Edwards Inn and Spa is located in Highlands and the Grandover Resort & Conference Center is located in Greensboro. All spas offer a variety of additional amenities including tennis, swimming, fine dining and even golf.
