How to Decorate a Romantic Table

Creating a romantic table design can help set the mood for the rest of the night.Creating a romantic table design can help set the mood for the rest of the night.

If you're planning a romantic evening for just the two of you, decorating a romantic table is the first step. Don't be afraid to go all-out with this design, and include special items that mean something to both of you or that correlate with the date of your special dinner. You can serve an elegant dish or simple pizza; if you decorate your table with a romantic theme, your entire dinner will seem elegant and special.

Purchase or prepare table linens. Measure your table if you don't already know the size, and purchase a tablecloth with matching cloth napkins. If you already have these linens, launder and press them so that they look fresh.

Center the tablecloth on the table. This is easy with tablecloths that have a center design, but a good rule of thumb to follow is to have the same amount of fabric left over on all sides of the table.

Fold the cloth napkins. If you have napkin rings, use these over the napkins for an extra touch. Instead of the everyday square fold, try a triangle fold for the napkins. This adds more elegance to your table.

Place a centerpiece on the table. This can be anything you choose, from a bouquet of flowers to an ornate candle holder to an item that means something to both of you, such as a memento of your first date, your wedding or another romantic memory you share.

Add candles to the table. You can place single tapers on either side of the centerpiece, or place a larger candle holder off to the side. Light the candles right before the meal.

Set the table ahead of time. Bring out your best dishes and silverware, and create your place settings. You can bring serving dishes to the table or remove the plates, fill them and replace them to serve the meal.
